Music of Spirals began its life with a progression I became obsessed with in my master’s studies: a Baroque-like sequence of gradual, stepwise motion spiraling infinitely upward or downward. This sequence has made its way into almost all of my music since. Something about the piano trio as a genre always struck me as demanding a certain compositional rigor, and so the resulting piece presents this progression as transparently as possible. Structurally, this trio is essentially just two spiraling sequences back to back, both beginning spaciously and delicately before achingly contracting into a frenzied rush. Many thanks to the brilliant musicians of Longleash Trio, whose work has been enormously inspirational to me.
